Important original letter signed by Andrew Jackson inscribed Hermitage August 24, 1828 at right top, which reads: “Hermitage August 24th 1828/ My Dr. Sir/ I forgot to t sugest to you the propriety of having republished in the Nashville Republican Doctor Wakins letter to the Editor of the Knoxville republican Enquirer. I hope you will have it done, as if I should appear before the public, I will have to refer to it when taking a review of the affair with Dickenson, to show that the McNairys are those alluded to by him & Corbin Lee, & their hostility has never died although they have acted secretly under the mask of friendship. / If anything new, write me / yrs respectfully/ Andrew Jackson/ Mr Earle/ ALS, 1p. 4to.” Mr. Earle refers to Ralph E. W. Earle, who Jackson was enlisting to compile documents for a whitewashing committee to cover up Jackson’s 1806 duel with Charles Dickenson. The Dr. Watkins was Dr. Gassaway Watkins, who nearly was challenged t a duel in the aftermath. Dr. Watkins left TN for a time, and was Thomas Jefferson’s personal physician.
