Important and early pipe tomahawk with spontoon head, tacked shafted, pewter tokens, embosses spotted tail, with tomahawk and arrow design. The head measures approx. 9-3/8” from the tip of the bowl to the tip of the blade. The blade measures approx. 2-1/2” across the widest portion. The blade is well forged and lightly engraved with decorations. The original shaft measures approx. 28” from tip to tip showing a great dark patina with many darkened brass tacks, many of which are also missing from the top edge. The shaft is original to the head and shows three dime-size tokens with the aforementioned designs. The shaft shows a great patina and is Indian made, properly drilled. The head has come loose upon its shaft and needs slight conservation and small restoration. Spotted tail was one of the most famous Indian chiefs, and this was believed to be his pipe tomahawk. With a copy of letter that states “This tomahawk was collected in the 1890’s by Thomas M. Vinson who lived at 101 Milk St., Boson in1927. He gave all his Indian items to his granddaughter, Polly Barbour”. The signature is illegible and it is not dated. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $10,000 - $20,000
