Important Western Historical 1876 Winchester rifle .45-75 caliber, 24” full octagon barrel, full magazine, rifle butt, marked “TM&M Co” on right rear of buttstock, serial #8557, blue finish, standard wood stocks, standard thumb dust over. The initials stand for “Tombstone Mill & Mining Co” founded by Albert and Ed Schieffelin. The Tombstone Mine and Milling Company was one of the most important companies in the active mining in Tombstone, AZ. Ed Schieffelin and his brother were two of the key early Arizona pioneers and important town members. They were well acquainted with Wyatt Earp and his brothers and belonged to many of the same organizations. The Schieffelins were important players in the intrigue and history of this infamous Western frontier town. This rifle is discussed in depth in an article written by John A. Kopec entitled “A Tombstone Centennial Winchester”, published in Arms Gazette January 1980, where it discusses the founding of the mines, this rifle, and the provenance of the rifle since the 1940’s and the fact that this rifle was probably in Tombstone at the time of the shootout of the OK Corral and when the US Cavalry was warring in Arizona with Cochise and Geronimo
