Important Victorian Autograph Album
Important Victorian Autograph Album, ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPHS OF EMINENT PERSONS. COLLECTED BY E.H. STANWOOD, approximately 200 pages, 4to (9.25" x 11.5"), leather covers with tooled gold monogram on front cover and title on spine. Seventy-six autographed cards, averaging 2.25" x 3.5", are carefully placed in slotted leaves so as to eliminate glue damage. These are not clipped signatures! Rather, they are intentionally penned autographs and appear to have been collected during the mid-1870's. Although numerous cards have been removed from the album, those remaining still provide an interesting mix of late 19th century American celebrities. Politicians make for an especially strong category, with a stunning run of Territorial and Reconstruction governors. Among the personalities represented are the following: Commodore Nutt and Minnie Warren (Barnum stars); Robert B. Elliot (African-American congressman from SC); General and Mrs.Tom Thumb (Barnum stars); Elisha Baxter (Arkansas Unionist, later Governor); Abijah Gilbert (Carpetbagger Governor of Florida); Ann Eliza Young (one of Brigham Young's wives); John B. Gordon (CSA General, Georgia Senator); Buffalo Bill Cody (Entertainer); James L. Kemper (CSA General, Virginia Governor); Susan B. Anthony (Suffragette); Mary Livermore (Suffragette, Reformer);and Andrew Johnson (17th U.S. President). The album's covers are moderately worn on the high point's, however the binding remains tight. Internally, there is a wide range of conditions among the pages and the cards. Soiling, water stains and foxing have affected some cards, while others are nearly pristine. Very good condition would be a conservative overall grade.
