Important Native American Ghost Dance shirt, approx. 44” in length and 16” width at the shoulders. The bone colored shirt has long sleeves with the material cut into fringe under the sleeves, down both sides of the shirt and across the bottom; there is no lining to this shirt and there is a red strip around the collar. On one side of the shirt is a large painted green turtle in the center of the shirt and plus two smaller turtles at the lower portion of that side; at the neck there are two “V” painted lines, one red, the other green; on each sleeve, there are green crossed arrows; there are also five attached turkey feathers ornamenting this side of the garment. The other side of the shirt displays a large red, green, blue and yellow sun burst in the middle with the same crossed green arrows on the sleeves and one green and one yellow moon at the bottom of the shirt along with three black asterisk shaped stars. This garment is in overall good condition with some soiling from age and some fading to the paint used to ornament this important religious garment. The Ghost Dance was created from a vision by Wovoka in which he envisioned all Indians being returned to their lands and way of life with the disappearance of the white man; it became popular in 1890, particularly among the Sioux. Kicking Bear of the Minneconjou advised his people, who were being confined on reservations and starved out, that if the dancers wore their Ghost Dance shirts, painted with magic symbols, the soldiers bullets would not strike them. Sitting Bull consented to Kicking Bear remaining at the Standing Rock reservation to teach the Ghost Dance. His support of the Ghost Dance movement lead ultimately to Sitting Bull’s death on December 15, 1890. A rare find and worthy of any museum or private collection. Est.: $2,000-$4,000.
