Important Model 1875 U.S. Trapdoor Officer’s Model 2nd Type Rifle with provenance, 45-70 cal., 26” round barrel, blue and case hardened finish, checkered wood stocks with removable semi-pistol grip. This gun is in overall good to very good condition showing an even brown patina to the barrel’s surface, engraved lock plate, hammer, top tang, trap door release, trigger guard, trapdoor, barrel band and butt plate showing faint traces of case color with balance of surfaces gone to a silvery tone. The bore is good, the action crisp, the markings and engraving very good; the adjustable rear vernier sight is in good condition, the front gold flashed flip up Beeche’s sight is good; the wood stock is overall good showing carry wear to the checkering on the fore stock, sharper checkering at the wrist and on the pistol grips, scattered nicks, mars and scratches from use and storage but nicely fitted to the metal edges; slight crack at the front of the lock plate in the wood going forward about 1-1/2”. Engraved metal fore tip shows approx. 50% nickel finish and correct style wood ramrod with knurled metal securing tip present. This highly desirable trapdoor is accompanied by written provenance stating it had been passed down in the family of its original owner, S.G. Fisher, Chief of Scouts to General O.O. Howard during the campaign against the Nez Perce Indians in 1877. Specifically, the gun was acquired by a well-known Montana collector from Doug Pollan of Kooskia, Idaho in 1996. Mr. Pollan states in an original notarized letter that the gun belonged to his 3rd great uncle, S.G. Fisher who served in the military at Fort Mount, Idaho (where there is a present day monument with his name on it) and that during the Nez Perce Indian Wars, Fisher served as a scout to the Army and soldiers bought this Springfield Officer’s Model Rifle as a present for him as a token of appreciation and for a job well done. Mr. Pollan further notes that Fisher never married and that after his death, the rifle passed to down through the family, eventually to Pollan’s grandparents Alfred and Myrna Moore, then to his father, Neut Pollan and finally to him. Additional documentation is provided concerning the chain of provenance to our consignor’s estate. Also included is a book by Jerome Greene entitled “Nez Perce Summer 1877” and an original hardback volume of The Historical Society of Montana, Vol. II, 1896 which has an entire chapter dedicated to a section of the Journal of S.G. Fisher (pages 269-282). An important Historical piece. Est.: $10,000-$20,000.
