Important Gustave Young engraved 1851 Colt Navy, serial #37716, presented by Samuel Colt to Col. J. W. Ripley, superintendent of Springfield Armory at time of presentation. This very deluxe engraved 1851 was in closeproximity to two other deluxe engraved examples of the 1851 Navy; one presented to the Connecticut Historical Society serial #37697, and #37698 was presented to General Robert E. Lee. Reference The Colt EngravingBook, Vol. 1, page 118 where it is illustrated in full color, and Colt Engraving, where it is also pictured. Also shown in Samuel Colt Presents and many other publications on Colt presentation firearms.The revolver shows the original inscription, “Col. J. W. Ripley, from the inventor.” The pistol is superbly engraved by the hand of the master himself with extra deluxe and finely cut flowing scrolls, animal heads,Colt’s Patent hand cut in banner on left side of frame, and generally very deluxe and profuse best-quality Young engraving.
