Important Gen. Robert E. Lee 1868 Letter Important Gen. Robert E. Lee ALS Discussing Gen. Albert Sid
Important Gen. Robert E. Lee ALS Discussing Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston. Written at Lexington, VA, 25 March 1868 to Hancock M. Johnston, his son. 7.75"x 9.75" on lined stationery, nicely custom framed to 13"x16". Laid down on thin board, with perfect smooth surface and no sign of adhesive bleed-through. Probably very slightly trimmed. Very Fine appearance.
Lee thanks Gen. Johnston's son for a gift of artifacts to Washington College, and then fondly remembers "my comrade, Gen A.S. Johnston, one of the bravest, truest, and noblest men I have ever known." Johnston was the first Confederate Corps Commander to be killed in the Civil War, while leading his men into action at Shiloh in 1862. He was also Lee's commander in the U.S. Cavalry before the War, and lead raids against the Comanche Indians as well as the expedition to put down the Mormon uprising in Utah. Believed to be the only letter Lee ever wrote setting forth his opinion of this significant Confederate general. An important unpublished letter.
