Important Colt 1851 London small-guard Navy, deluxe banknote scroll-engraved and inscribed “From the inventor to Admiral Sir Thos. Cochrane.” Serial number “1623”. The pistol shows extremely fine quality and deluxe engraving that is deep cut in semi relief, beautiful and tight scrolls, Colt’s Patent hand-engraved in a scroll on the left side of the frame. The Colt is in very good plus to near fine original condition showing approx. 40-60% original blue on the barrel, evenly thinning and drifting to a light grey patina with just starting surface erosion and normal aging. The edges are crisp, the barrel address excellent. The cylinder shows approx. 20-40% original blue, drifting to patina, and nearly all the original cylinder scene, at least 90-95%. Engagement dates on front edge of cylinder are fully legible and Ormsby signature also visible. The cylinder retains all of its pins. The hammer, frame, and lever show 40-60% case hardening starting to drift to a silvery grey with light colors mixed in. The backstrap and triggerguard show 90% plus original silver plate. The varnish deluxe wood grips are near fine with 90-95% varnish, just some scratches, marks and slight wear at the edges. The action is crisp, the interior near excellent. The pistol has seen little use. All matching visible serial numbers, with small dot indicating special treatment and numeral “1” on the front of the triggerguard, probably indicating presentation. The Colt is contained within its original to the period dusty rose colored velvetine-line English style partition case with instruction label in lid. The case is in very good condition showing some minor fading, wear at contact points, some slight fraying, but generally good to very good overall with 90-95% of label, just some discolorations and small losses. A Navy-marked Dixon flask is included in very good condition with some minor dents, 75-85% varnish, most of bright blue on the spring. Along with a nipple wrench and mold in good condition, with 250 count cap tin also in good condition with blue steel cleaning rod in good condition with proper compartment cover. The exterior of the case is brass mounted oak, and in good to very good condition with just slight scratches, normal aging, a couple of stress-type small cracks, and retaining all its original brass hardware and screws. Sir Thomas Cochrane was one of the most important and well-recognized naval heroes in British history second only to the Admiral Lord Nelson. As head of the British Navy, Admiral Cochrane was the most likely candidate for a gift from Samuel Colt, who was obviously pursuing a contract with Britain. Admiral Cochrane’s life and career has been the subject for many books and even movies. He is named as the inspiration for the fictional novels featuring Horacio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey. He served with distinction during the Napoleonic wars and was nicknamed “The Seawolf” by the French. He was dismissed by the Royal Navy following a conviction by the Stock exchange for fraud and served as a mercenary for the countries Chile, Brazil, and Greece. He was reinstated in 1832 as an admiral in the British navy and eventually earned the honorary title “Rear Admiral of the United Kingdom”. It would be impossible to document the accomplishments and career of Cochrane in the space available as it literally fills volumes. In summary, this naval officer’s fighting career compared to the greatest of all time. His political exploits and long life are an amazing story in themselves. Charles DuPont considered this the most important presentation in his Colt collection which spanned an active period of over 75 years. A research folder of information is included.
