Important Collection of Military Artifacts, Documents. Br. Gen. Dollard Ménard
Brigadier General Dollard Ménard, DSO, CD, of the Royal 22nd and the Fusiliers Mont-Royal. Brigadier General Ménard was such an important figure in Canadian military history that it would be unfair to attempt a brief description here. Suffice it to say that a quick internet search gives a deep and serious portrait of this outstanding individual. While his rich group of medals can be examined at the Museum of the Fusiliers Mont-Royal, the collection offered here is both highly significant in documenting his career, and as an important slice of Canadian military history. This lot consists of a 200 page notebook; a photograph album of over 605 identified photographs; a correspondence folder with 298 newspaper clippings relating to the parents of Brigadier General Ménard; a unique document hand written by a French nun, recounting her observations and actions during the Dieppe Raid aiding the Canadian wounded; and a goat's hair shirt made in Afghanistan and worn by Brigadier General Ménard while serving in that area; and a photograph of Major J. L. Tremblay, a military colleague. Much of this material documents in detail Brigadier General Ménard's service in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan in early 1938. Brigadier General Ménard is however best known to Canadians for his service at Dieppe, where he was wounded five times before being dragged to a rescue boat by his men. It has been suggested, and we concur, that the greatest value of this collection lies in the totality of its elements, and that it should by all means be kept intact. It is a wonderful portrait of a great soldier, and an honour to his two associated regiments. As well as his Canadian Service Medals, he was also recipient of the following international honours : Distinguished Service Order (United Kingdom) : Officer of the Legion d'Honneur and the Croix de Guerre (France); Grand Officer de l'Ordre National du Québec; Citoyen d'Honneur de la ville de Dieppe. After the war, he served as military attaché to the Canadian embassy in Paris, until 1951, then later served with the UN as chief état-majeur of the peacekeepers-observers of the cease fire line between India and Pakistan in Kashmir. Later he was named Commander of the Third Brigade, and of the Secteur-Est du Québec. Brigadier General Dollard Ménard passed away on Jan. 14, 1997, at the age of 83.
