Important 20th Century & Italian Design

Auction Details

Wright will offer the finest collection of masterworks of the twentieth century in a series of auctions on December 3rd and 5th. Important 20th Century Design on December 3rd will showcase objects from the early part of the century by Mallet-Stevens, Hoffmann, Bouy, and Loos. Early modernism by Mies van der Rohe, Rietveld, and Aalto illustrate the influence on later designers such as Kjaerholm, Durell-Stone, and Jacobsen who are also represented in the sale. Organic forms including a rare redwood coffee table by Nakashima, a masterpiece of Bertoia's jewelry and Noguchi Rudder Fin dining table show the artistic prowess of American design in the middle of the century.

Wright's third sale of Important Italian design will feature a selection of items that demonstrate the strength and vitality of Italian artistry. Following the Important 20th Century Design sale on December 3, our Italian session continues with an academic selection of designs by the great 20th century designers, from an early Pietro Chiesa light to a Postmodern Andrea Branzi shelf. The Italian sale will also feature a pair of Gio Ponti lounge chairs and a sofa from the Hotel Parco dei Principi, Rome. The master Carlo Mollino is represented in several lots including a rare set of six chairs, a dining table and two bunk beds from the Casa del Sole. An impressive Osvaldo Borsani coffee table with glass decoration by artist Lucio Fontana illustrates the collaborative and creative spirit of mid-century Italian crafts. Works by Gaetano Pesce, Ettore Sottsass and Angelo Mangiarotti will be offered alongside fine works by Carlo Di Carli, Ico Parisi, Guglielmo Ulrich, Paolo Buffa, Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Fulvio Bianconi.
