Auction Details

An unrivaled selection of furniture and objects will be featured in Wright’s two-day Important 20th Century Design auction. Both sessions contain works by prominent modern and contemporary designers and offer extensive sections of site-specific, commissioned works as well as single-designer collections.

Important highlights from the first day include lots from Gio Ponti’s Via Dezza 49 residence, Vladimir Kagan’s Friedman commission and the interior furnishings from one of Krueck & Sexton’s early commissions. In the contemporary end of the sale, a handful of items by Johanna Grawunder offer a unique range of works that all emphasize the sustainability and efficiency within her sculptural aesthetic.

Sculptural Design is an up-and-coming area of the market, represented in the sale by three works from Isamu Noguchi’s Gemini sculptures, including Shaft & Root, Wind Catcher, and Pierced Table; other notable works within this category include Francoise See’s minimal credenza, Giacomo Balla’s Futuristic vanity, and a selection of works from Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti.

Day one is accented with an amazing grouping of contemporary designs from Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, Sandro Chia and Mimmo Paladino. The Italian artists represent a distinct aesthetic that integrates social, historical and psychological concerns into functional, sculptural objects. The sale will mark one of the first opportunities to acquire works by the artists in the United States.

Day two is comprised of a carefully curated collection of design as well as an independent section of Post War + Contemporary art. The art portion of the sale features a Gerhard Richter painting, a large-scale Clement Meadmore sculpture and a selection of Ed Paschke works.

The Important 20th Century Design sale is rounded out by an incredible collection of works from New Hope artists Paul Evans, Phillip Powell and George Nakashima, a representative grouping of Louis Durot pieces and French furnishings from the original Pompidou interior and commissions by Jean Prouve, Charlotte Perraind and Pierre Jeanneret.

Wright is also pleased to announce the first auction exclusively devoted to the artwork of Harry Bertoia. Accompanied by a stand-alone catalog, Harry Bertoia: Material and Form, the sale will include masterworks from all major areas of his career. From his earliest metal works and monoprints to his sounding sculptures the auction will feature the finest offering of Bertoia’s art to have come to the market.

The two-day sale will undoubtedly be a season highlight and represent some of the finest works of 20th and 21st century design.
