This regal and remarkable floral carved charro saddle is extensively embroidered with lavish and intricate, artistically applied, flower and vine pattern silver thread along the borders, rigging, and repeating atop the bulldog tapaderos and notably opulent, oversized saddle bags. The traditional exposed Mexican rawhide covered tree and saddle horn are adorned with exquisite silver repoussé – forming a remarkable floral theme highlighted by the most intricate, three-dimensional roses. The stunning silver is the work product of A. Ochoa -- considered by most collectors to be the finest silver worker in Mexico during the late 19th and early 20th century. Ochoa has stamped his maker-mark “A. OCHOA” and “E.O.” atop the elegant saddle horn.

The saddle leather has been branded by the maker “TALABARTERIA.DE / YGNACIO.ORTIZ. /PUEBLA./MESON DESTA TEREZ.No. 6.” Thhe rawhide seat is additionally marked “FUSTES FINOS DE POLEA / MADERA OARANTIZADA POR / M. CASTANON / CALLEJON DE OACAHUATENO / No 3. / PUEBLA -- (the lines separated by a steer head graphic).

Includes breathtaking oversize saddle bags, featuring bold three-dimensional silver threaded vines, leaves, and flowers with a flap secured by a lovely 3” repousse concha. The saddle also includes the original silver inlaid cinch with multicolored woven fabric adornments and is in extraordinary overall condition -- considering it was built nearly 120 years ago by Mexican masters of a lost art. The matching bridle is done in silver thread along with the rose repousse conchos, buckles and tips. The bit is a small curb with silver inlaid cheeks.

Provenance: Originally purchased by George Westinghouse, descended through his family, to current owner.
