Important 1864 McClellan & Pendleton Ribbon Very Rare and Important 1864 McClellan & Pendleton Ribbo
Very Rare and Important 1864 McClellan & Pendleton Ribbon in Choice Condition. The great rarity of ribbons for this candidacy has always been a great mystery: in the area of campaign tokens and medals, at least as many are known for McClellan as for Lincoln. In ferrotypes, there are more different Lincoln varieties, but McClellan examples are relatively plentiful. But when it comes to ribbons, Lincoln's, while scarcer than Lincoln's 1860 ribbons, exist in vastly greater varieties and total population than those for McClellan. In 1985, Fischer listed five different varieties, only two of which he was able to picture. But it is safe to say that the total known population at that time, of all five varieties, was probably less than a dozen! For no particular reason, over the last ten years or so, perhaps another eight or ten examples have surfaced in the hobby, "downgrading" McClellans from exceedingly rare to merely very rare, but this candidate remains in a league with Jackson, Tyler, Cass, and Pierce in terms of difficulty in obtaining a representative example. And McClellan is particularly sought-after because of the broad-based interest in memorabilia of the Civil War period. The present example, from the Joe Brown Collection, is noteworthy for its spectacular crisp and virtually pristine condition, with full original selvage (fringe) across top and bottom, as well as for its striking maroon-on-green color combination! Another of the real prize items from that landmark collection. 2.125" x 5.25".
