It is our pleasure to offer an Imperial Russian plate made by the Imperial Porcelain Factory in the period 1796-1801.

To the rear of the plate is the cipher of the Tsar Paul 1, Catherine the Great's son.

The plate is heavily embossed in gold on cobalt blue. The gold is raised and is probably "honey" gold.

To the centre of the plate is a handpainted masterpiece of the Battle of Fontenoy.
The Battle of Fontenoy was probably the most memorable French victory in the War of Austrian Succession. It was fought at Fontenoy in the Austrian Netherlands on May 11, 1745.

French forces under Marshal Maurice de Saxe were besieging Tournay. An Anglo-Dutch-Hanoverian army under the Duke of Cumberland, known as "The Pragmatic Army" advanced to the relief of Tournay, with the British forces attacking French positions uphill. The French lost 7,300 (of 49,000 present) men, while the British lost 7,500 (of 48,500), a defeat for Cumberland's forces. His assault, carried out by 16,000 British and Hanoverian troops, repulsed repeated attacks by the finest cavalry regiments in the French Army, including the Maison du Roi, until it was defeated by a counterattack carried out by the French cavalry, 5,000 men of The Irish Brigade and the Normandy and Vaisseaux regiments of French infantry. The attack against the French centre, had it been carried out with more skill, could have been decisive. As Frederick the Great later remarked, "A quarter- wheel to the left or the right would have brought victory".
