Impeachment of Andrew Johnson. Letter f
Impeachment of Andrew Johnson. Letter from eyewitness D.M. Davis at Johnson's trial. Writing to his father, Dr. Henry Porter (different surname noted), Apr. 16, 1868, "I went to the impeachment trial...If you could come...before the first of the month you could spend your time very profitably by attending the trial - the inaugural of Ben Wade - and after it a very interesting time in Congress. It is very probable that events will transpire here within the next 20 to 30 days, the like of which never occurred before and may never again...." Written on letterhead of Auditor's Office, 2 pp., the second page with perpendicular "cross-writing," to save use of an additional sheet of paper. Letter choice. With original envelope, stamp nicely cancelled. With free-franked envelope entirely in hand of Ben Wade, President Pro-Tem of Senate, enemy of Lincoln, and in turn, of Johnson. Wade was literally only one vote away from ousting Johnson and assuming Presidency of the U.S. The decisive vote was cast in Johnson's favor, and "impeachment was blown into the air." Wade cover very fine.
