<B>Impeachment of Andrew Johnson - House of Representatives Managers <I>Carte de Visite</B></I>.</B></I> Andrew Johnson was the first and last President to be impeached; however, he was acquitted by a single vote in the Senate. Essentially the power struggle and politics surrounding the impeachment trial are many and varied; in short, Johnson violated the "Tenure of Office Act" when he removed Edwin M. Stanton from office. This CDV features members of the House of Representatives, who served as managers during the hearing to impeach the President. Pictured are some familiar faces: Benjamin Butler, Thaddeus Stevens, John Bingham, George Boutwell, John Logan, Thomas Williams, and James Wilson. Bears the M.B. Brady imprint on the verso.
