Imboden, John Daniel.
(1823-95) CSA general. He entered Confederate service in 1861 as captain of the Staunton Artillery, a light battery, which he commanded at the initial capture of Harper's Ferry. After service at 1st Manassas, he organized the 1st Virginia Partisan Rangers and took part in the battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic during Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign. Promoted to brigadier general, Imboden conducted a famous raid into Northwestern Virginia, where he severed the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He served with distinction in the Gettysburg campaign, especially on the arduous retreat from Gettysburg when he was instrumental at Williamsport in saving the trains of General Lee's army. He later captured the garrison at Charlestown, West Virginia and fought gallantly during General Jubal Early's Valley campaign of 1864. Incapacitated by typhoid in the fall of 1864, he served the balance of the war on prison duty at Aiken, South Carolina.

War-date Autograph Letter Signed "J D Imboden" as Brigadier General,1p, 6x7¾", Hd Qrs Cav.
