Biography:

Ilya Efimovich Repin (1844-1930) received his first lessons in art as a young boy, while he was working for the talented painter I. M. Bunakov. He began his formal studies at age 19 at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Later he traveled to Paris and saw the Impressionists. He returned to Russia, and settled in Moscow, where he began painting.
Repin taught at St. Petersburg s Academy from 1894 to 1907. His style focused on realism, with some political themes. His paintings became well recognized as significant in the history of Russian art.
