A fairy tale book manuscript with original art, together with a signed etching. LATTIMORE, ELEANOR FRANCES, 1904-1986.  The Wisdom of the Wise Man. An unpublished, illustrated manuscript children's book, of the period. Formed of eight 5 3/4in x 9in sheets of paper folded in half and sewn together at the spine to form a book (5 3/4in x 4 1/2in). There are 18 pages of handwritten text and 14 original watercolors. Condition: Some toning, edge soiling, a few small dampstains. Together with a signed etching of a baby by Eleanor Lattimore. Inscribed "Marguerite". Signed in pencil lower right. 5 1/2in x 4 3/8in. Condition: Foxing, mostly at margins; edge tear at left margin. Eleanor Frances Lattimore was an American writer and illustrator of over 50 children's books. She was born and spent her childhood years in the "American Compound" in Shanghai, where her father taught at the Chinese government university. She arrived in the U.S. in 1920 and studied art in New York, Boston, and Oakland. Presumably, she met Xavier and Elsie Martinez when she was in Oakland, and created the book for their daughter, Micaela. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
