Illustrated Castine, Maine Broadside,<p>with a poem relative to the execution of one Ebenezer Ball, on Oct. 31, 1811, for the murder of Mr. John Tileston Downes. Deputy Downes was one of the earliest law enforcement officers to die in the line of duty, the second in the state of Maine, being shot in 1811 while approaching the house of a suspected counterfeiter. The broadside shows a man suspended from the gallows, with 2 columns of text below, the first column "written the day before his execution," the second column notes that it was written the day of the execution. Framed under glass, 9.5 x 13.25" visible.<p>Moderate toning, with folds. Insect damage visible, although the image and text are not seriously impacted. Not removed from frame for further examination.
