This fine 16-size Illinois Santa Fe Special pocket watch features a Montgomery dial with bold black numerals, red 5-minute markers, and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o'clock. The movement, marked Santa Fe Special, is a 21-jewel, double roller model adjusted to temperature and positions, manufactured by the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield. It is housed in an E.M. Ray Keystone J. Boss 10K gold filled case, patented, with a gold-filled composition made of two thick plates of solid 10-karat gold bonded over a base metal core. This case type is known for its durability and was a common choice for railroad-grade watches. The Santa Fe Special name was exclusive to the Santa Fe Watch Company, which marketed high-grade Illinois movements directly to railroad workers, offering reliable, precise timekeeping essential for the safety and efficiency of train operations. The Illinois Watch Company, founded in Springfield, Illinois in 1870, quickly earned a reputation for producing high-quality, precise timepieces, becoming a leading supplier of railroad-grade watches until its acquisition by Hamilton in 1928. Case diameter (excluding the bow): 2" dia. Case thickness: 0.5"W. Case diameter with bow: 2.5"L. Bow: 12mm. The overall weight of the pocket watch is 3.4 ounces.
