Igbo (Nigeria), Northeast Region, Izzi or Ezza area
Cap Mask, Ogbodo Enyi
Wood, paint
Height: 12 ¾ inches Length: 22 ½ inches Width: 11 ½ inches

A fanciful interpretation of an elephant, with the trunk transposed to the forehead, this mask, worn horizontally, shows slightly curving tusks projecting forward from beside the oval open mouth, a large nose, and flaring tubular eyes. A fully round subsidiary head extends on a neck from the back of the "elephant's" head. The colors are black and white, and the mask shows considerable wear. Its name means "spirit elephant".

It was danced by men's age grades, from youthful to elders, to purify the community, running from compound to compound, and at the funerals of its association members.

The forward-projection horn at the top is a recent replacement. Other than overall paint loss, the condition is otherwise good.

Provenance: Thomas D.
