<B>Idoma (Nigeria)</B></I><BR>Face Mask (<I>Ikpobi</B></I>)<BR>Wood, pigment<BR>Height: 9 3/8 inches Width: 6 ¾ inches Depth: 5 ½ inches<BR><BR>While in recent times the use of pairs of <I>ikpobi</B></I> masks has been confined to funerary ceremonies, the traditional use was radically different. <I>Ikpobi</B></I> appeared in the dances of successful returning warriors, in which the heads of vanquished enemies were brandished as trophies (adapted from Iris Hahner-Herzog, Maria Kecskési, and László Vajda. <I>Masques Africains de la collection Barbier-Mueller, L'autre Visage.</B></I> Paris: Adam Biro, 1997, p.152). There are old cracks at some attachment holes, one at the proper left lower area extending into a minor loss.
