Civil War/Indian War Model 1860 Staff & Field officers sword. Blade inscribed "H.C. Cook, Capt., 2nd Inft, U.S.A." blade also maker & retailer marked, "Ames mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass". and on the reverse, "Schuyler, Hartley & graham, NY, famous outfitter to Civil War officers. Henry Clay Cook was a veteran of the entire Civil War and mustered in the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry June 5th 1861 as a 2nd Lt. In Aug, 1861 he resigned from the volunteer forces and was commissioned 1st Lt. in the regular Army and assigned to the 16th Infantry. Promoted Captain Sept 24. 1864 2nd Infantry. (from which this sword dates) for meritorious service during the Atlanta campaign and the battle of Jonesboro, Ga. He was promoted all the way to Brigadier General in 1898 with many different commands ( too much to list here) including the dept of Arizona (1887-1892) where he was involved in the Apache campaigns. Sword has 29" blade with etched military motifs over half its length Capt Cooks inscription is in the central panel. Brass guard hinged on one side (Button missing) with nice eagle/flags motif. Sharkskin grip with twisted brass wire .Nickel steel scabbard is very good with no flaking, brass mounts, throat, and drag. An officer with a outstanding Civil War/Indian War record, he likely carried this sword throughout his service career and throughout the west. True Model 1860 Civil War S& F swords of this kind are very scarce. Comes with his complete National Archives records, including he and his wife's pension record, unit histories , etc. Consigner states he purchased this sword over 30 yrs ago from well known dealer Walter Budd of NC.
