Identified American Revolutionary War Soldier Miniature Painting of Major Jordan Harris (1763-1826) from Virginia
c. 1780s American Revolutionary War to Late 18th Century, Miniature Painting on Card, Major Jordan Harris, Original Period Brass Standing Frame, Very Fine.
This stunning 2.75” x 3.25” image is of Revolutionary War officer, Major Jordan Harris, shown in a chest up Protrait facing right. He is dressed in his Continental Army military uniform coat with a fancy ruffled white shirt. There is some scaling of the paint noted, mostly to the outer lower portions, while the overall image is clear and pleasing in its eye appeal. Jordan Harris of Virginia is identified as being born on May 20, 1763 and died on October 7, 1826. In addition, this text states that “Jordan Harris married (E)lizabeth Mosby Cannon April 2nd 1789 - She was born May 16th 1771.” During the American Revolution, he served his Country and the State of Virginia as a Major. Major Harris has been fully identified, in a clearly written period hand, upon the white oval back side of the painting itself.

This rare, historic original painting is said to have a rich pedigree (not present) to a Mrs. J. A. Dorcmus, of New York, a well-known "Colonial Dame." (From the information we have received), Mrs. Harris' husband, Horatio Turpin Harris, was a son of this paintings subject, Major Jordan Harris, a Virginian, of the Continental Army (1763-1826). He was a Member of the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati, and a grandson of Major John Harris, of Norwood, Powhatan County, Virginia, a Member of the Cumberland County Committee of Safety in 1776. His wife was said to be a Cousin of President Thomas Jefferson. The family is said to have descended from “Alfred The Great” and the Plantagenet Kings of England, of which this Harris Family is shown in: Pedigree CCXXXIX. of "Americans of Royal Descent." TAVl.nR MANSION, NEWPORT, KENTUCKY. (This is all we have at this time.)

It is said by the consignor to have come directly from the Harris family estate. Housed in an early brass easel frame, measures about 3" x 3.5" with its original loop attached at top, for display. An original, Antique example and would be a wonderful addition to any Revolutionary War, Historic Virginia or Miniature Painting collection.
