ca 1862-65. Arsenal made, composed of panels of machine sewn heavy linen, 46" x 46", with two whip-stitched eyelets and associated string for suspension. Accompanied by an old card mounted typed label:

SIGNAL FLAG & FIELD GLASSES Used by James Tibbets while signalman at Brigade Headquarters. He enlisted July 23, 1862 in Company E, 7th New York Heavy Artillery. Donated by his daughter Edith N. Tibbets of Gilboa.

Tibbets (also in records as Tibbits) enlisted at the age of 21 at Albany, and was mustered into Co. E, 113th New York Infantry. The 113th was subsequently converted into the 7th New York Heavy Artillery and spent much of the early years of the war in garrison duty defending Washington. In 1864, they saw action throughout Virginia, seeing action at Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, and Petersburg. Like many artillery units, they lost fearfully at Cold Harbor. At war's end, the Regiment had lost 669 men, including 291 KIA, the remaining through disease or in southern prisoner of war camps.

Condition: Staining on fly end, one large tear in lower right panel, minor loss along lower edge, several scattered minor holds.
