This is an officer's 1871 pattern helmet for the 4th Dragoon Guards. The skull and peaks are gilt metal with gilt metal edging. There is a gilt floral band across the top of the front peak and a gilt metal band running from the rear of the plume base down the bottom edge of the rear peak. The front plate has a diamond cut silvered star with an enamel Order of St. Patrick centered on top. The gilt plume holder has a four pronged base and suspends a white horsehair plume with small plume boss. The large gilt ear bosses suspend a velvet backed gilt chin chain. Both peaks are lined with green leather and there is a quilted silk lining. With a black helmet storage tin with a brass inscribed plaque marked "C.H.Currey Esq./4th. Dragoon Guard" in script.

Condition: Very good, the skull, peaks and other gilt components have a generally bright appearance with some scattered light dents. The silvered star has some dark aged patina in the protected areas. The plume has some noticeably shorter hairs at the top. The silk lining is excellent. The green leather has scuffs. The storage tin is good as refinished with some dents, lid does not shut easily and the hasp loop is absent.
