Large Temple Textile Panel with Three Stylized Figures
Ica
A.D. 1000 - 1350
Camelid Fiber, and cotton
Height 93 ¼ in. Width 22 ¾ in.

The large size and bold scale of this interlocked tapestry-weave textile suggest that it was for a public context. It could have been a segment of a still larger temple hanging, or it might have functioned as a public banner. The red-ground continuously woven field shows three large white crescent-crowned frontally displayed figures placed one on top of the other. The staring-eyed faces have bared teeth and the hands and feet are transformed into simplified monstrous heads in profile. Face and head details are in a muted gold almost identical to the integrally woven bottom and top border bands which depict processions of red birds, again in profile. Other than minor losses and stains, the condition is good.

Provenance
Arte Textil (Steve Berger), San Francisco, California

Important
