In 1930, Iwao Yamawaki (born Iwao Fujita) left Japan to study at the Bauhaus in Dessau with his wife Michiko Yamawaki, whose name he had adopted. A practicing architect in his native country, Yamawaki began coursework in architectural and interior design, but soon switched to photography, studying under Walter Peterhans. As this photograph reveals, Yamawaki never surrendered his passion for line and space, enjoying cast shadows and dramatic perspectives. Yamawaki's images combine traditional Japanese aesthetic principles such as simplicity and order with Bauhaus ideologies and techniques. Yamawaki returned to Japan two years later and revived his career in architecture, applying his newly developed understanding of perspective, space, design and composition to his work, and eventually became one of the most important architects of postwar Japan.
