This early cane has a 1.5" tall walrus ivory knob carved into an octagonal shape and has "1834" in scrimshawengraving on one facet, and "J.S. Smith" on the opposite facet. There is no collar joining the handle to the exotichardwood shaft, but there are coin silver eyelets. The 2.5" Long ferrule is nickel with steel tip. Minor damage tofinish of shaft near ferrule. Overall length 36.5 ".(EST 600-800)
