(1897-1982) Soviet-Armenian military commander and Marshal of the Soviet Union, the first non-Slavic military officer to become a commander of a Front. Important content war-date A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., June 28, 1942, to NIKITA KRUSHCHEV (1894-1971), notifying him that Bagramyan has been sacked as the Chief of Staff of the Southwestern Front following the destruction of twenty divisions under his command at the Second Battle of Kharkov. In part: "... I take with me the most cherished memories in this crucial period in our country's history. I send you my best regards and heartfelt wishes for success in the struggle against the German occupiers..." Following this demotion, Bagramyan was appointed commander of the 16th Army, which played a crucial role in the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, the site of the largest tank battle in history, which resulted in a strategic defeat for the German Army.
