ISLAMIC EMERALD GREEN GLASS BOTTLE 10TH CENTURY
AN EXTREMELY RARE INTACT ISLAMIC ABBASID OR SAMANID GREEN GLASS BOTTLE, EARLY 10TH/11TH CENTURY.the
body of cylindrical form tapering slightly towards the bottom, the flattened shoulder rising to a narrow truncated conical neck with a
flanged mouth, kick base with pontil mark.Similar Piece Sold At Sothebys ARTS OF THE ISLAMIC WORLD 28 APRIL 2004
LONDON Sold For 7,200 GBP ( Around $12,000 at that time )The form is typical of a group of plain cylindrical bottles traditionally
ascribed to ninth/tenth-century Iran. Two related examples excavated at Nishapur are published by Jens Kroeger as 9th-10th
century: see Kroeger, J., Nishapur: Glass of the Early Islamic Period, New York, 1995, nos.108-9. An early eleventh-century date
seems more likely, however, in view of the marked similarity to a silver flask in the Hermitage bearing the name of Shaikh al-'Amid
Abu 'Ali Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Shazan, the vizier of Balkh between 1030-50 (Ward, R., Islamic Metalwork, London, 1993, fig.
39). Further dating evidence was provided in 1983 when a cut glass bottle of this form was discovered in the stupa of the Dule
Temple (Dulesi) in Ji Xian, Tianjin, China dating to A.D. 1058 (see Carboni, S. and D. Whitehouse, Glass of the Sultans, New York,
2001, p.169).
