New York, Chapellier Galleries, Irving Ramsey Wiles, 1861-1948, November 1967, no. 57 (illustrated) St. Joseph, Missouri, The Albrecht Gallery, Museum of Art, Art of Irving Ramsey Wiles, pl. 20, April-May 1971, no. 20 (illustrated) <p> Irving Wiles, a protégé of William Merritt Chase in the 1890s learned to master flickering, fluid brushwork from his Long Island neighbor. The surety of his stroke reveals itself in the rattan chair, a frequent prop in his early work. Reminiscent of his mentor is the indirect light source, and the model captured in a moment of distraction.
