The present work, however, derives from another series called SMALL TRADES, executed in 1950 in London, Paris, and New York. Most of these images depict manual workers in their uniforms, holding the implements of their trade. The uniform of the "sculptor's model" consists of nothing at all and so, here, we see her elegantly positioned with the props that allow her to maintain poses that would interest the accomplished sculptor. She stands against Penn's signature background and is lit from the side, as is common in Penn's portraiture. The strength of the lighting is especially appropriate here as the complexities of her form, what most concerns the sculptor, are described through the use of such light.
