Victorian 18 K gold and turquoise love / friendship necklace. This necklace originated in Ireland in the mid 1900's, it is referred to as the Cladagh emblem and represents the Irish who emigrated during the famine years.
Measures 17 1/4 inches long when open and weighs 0.7oz on postal scale.
Exceptional workmanship of chain, which concertinas - expanding and contracting when gently pulled. Consists of round disks with openwork stars closely woven with very finely ridged long links that glide over each other. Intersperced with solid round tubular gold links, also finely textured. The necklace opens/closes in the front. A pair of arms, below the elbow, one with a ruffled moulded bracelet/cuff and both with turquoise beads, the open hands holding an apple or heart in classic symbolism for friendship and love.
No visible marks (like much Victorian jewelry), but guaranteed 18K gold.
Good condition.
