INVITATION TO BALL FOR HENRY CLAY. An engraved invitation on coated stock to "...a BALL to be given at the Washington Assembly rooms on the evening of Tuesday the 12th of April 1842 in compliment to the Hon. Henry Clay on the occasion of his retirement from the Councils of the Country." 3.75 x 5.34" with a bust of Clay at top. Some waterstains in lower right corner, smaller stain at upper left, but generally very good condition. Clay "retired" in 1842, resigning his Senate seat in protest of President Tyler's anti-Whig policies. He returned to the limelight two years later, running for President.
