(INVENTOR OF COCA COLA)
(1831-1888) Confederate cavalry officer who served the South from May 1862 until the end of the war. In 1886, an Atlanta prohibition law persuaded him to rename and rewrite the formula of his popular nerve tonic, stimulant and headache remedy and later that year Coca-Cola debuted sweetened with sugar instead of wine. He died just five months after filing for incorporation of the first Coca-Cola Company. Very rare Civil War date partly-printed D.S. signed twice "J. S. Pemberton" as captain in the 12th (Robinson's) Georgia State Guard Cavalry, on "Confederate States of America, Requisition for Forage form", 1p. oblong 4to., Atlanta, Oct. 1, 1863, requisitioning forage for 40 animals in Pemberton's cavalry company for five days in October 1863. Military service records included. Very good.
