Bottom marked "Type II / No. 531151 / Made in Liechtenstein / (Customs Union with Switzerland) / by Contina Ltd Mauren / System Curt Herzstark". Included is a folding instruction sheet & two booklets. The instructions appear to be very complete in showing the use of the machine. Machine has orange painted fitted metal case & is carried on the belt in a green web pouch. The idea of a pocket calculator was conceived by Curt Herzstark in the 1930’s however, having a Jewish father and Catholic mother, Curt was taken by the Nazis and was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Curt informed the soldiers at the camp of his idea and was allowed to proceed in developing the calculator which would be given to the Fuher as a present after "we win the war". Curt was assured that this would make him a Aryan. For Curt, this meant survival if he could create his idea. After the Soviet military arrived Curt fled to Austria and began his search for financial backing wherein he met Franz Joseph II who was the Price of Liechtenstein. Franz showed significant interest and formed the Contina AG Mauren company which began production. An estimate 140,000 Curta calculators were produced, (80,000 Type I and $60,000 Type II, such as this example). A remarkable invention that was highly sought after until the development of electronic calculators in the 1970’s. CONDITION: Calculator appears to be in good, serviceable condition. Case has some paint chipping. (02-24268-2/KAT). NON-GUN. $300-500.
