INTERESTING DUTCH OR GERMAN LARGE BORE RIFLE
WITH BRASS COVERING TO BREECH & MUZZLE, CONVERTED TO PERCUSSION. Cal. 72. NSN. Bbl. 32 1/2", w/ 8" oct. brass sleeve at breech section & 3/4" brass turned muzzle ring is fitted w/ semi-buckhorn rear & brass bead front sights. Breech plug is converted to percussion w/ bolster. Early style lock w/ arched & rounded plate has proof or maker's stamp at front. Percussion hammer is formed from original serpentine cock. Full length stock of light colored hardwood, possibly maple has lovely curled or tiger grain structure & is pinned to bbl. It has some well done relief carving at thimble as extension to ramrod channel as well as around transition of comb to grip & on left side of butt. Both sides of butt are nicely stamped J. E. Vasli. There is also what appears to be a crowned cartouche on right side at rear. Rudimentary furniture is of sheet iron & there is no buttplate. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron parts dark brown patina w/ scattered pitting. Brass w/ old cleaning is toned. Stock retains nearly all of an old finish w/ hand wear at normal carrying points & spatters of white paint. A 5" chunk is missing from left side of bbl. channel toward muzzle. Pin holes for mounting stock show considerable wear. Fair, rusted bore w/ strong rifling. Lock does not operate well.
