The exact purpose of this Oriental bone-handled cane is unclear. The handle has two parts with threads so that thetop can be screwed to the bottom. The bottom portion that is fitted to the stepped partridge wood shaft resembles astylus. The top portion of the handle has 5 grooves, each with 4 holes, and 4 ridged bands. The top portion of thehandle could have held any number of small objects, including singing insects or scribe's instruments. When closedthe handle is 7.75" to the tip of the "stylus," and 6" to the opposite edge. There are 2 shrinkage cracks in the bottomportion of the handle, one that makes the threading somewhat loose, and 2 old filled splits in the shaft near the 1.5"nickel and steel ferrule. Overall length, 37".(EST 200-400)
