BY H. MONK. Cal. 12 Ga., 2". S# 19369. This maker is not listed in Nigel Brown. However, there are other gunmakers named Monk. It has 26" dovetailed bbls. marked "H. MONK. CHESTER." on slightly raised at breech end narrow swamped game rib. Breech end of rib is silver inlaid "2 IN". Bbl. flats stamped w/ Birmingham nitro proofs for 2" chambers & 7/8 oz. of shot. French gray boxlock action features automatic safety & dbl. triggers. Fences decorated w/ Woodward style arcaded motif. Action engraved w/ 50% coverage simple scroll within line borders. "H. Monk" is engraved in each side. Blued top lever, floorplate & trigger guard are also engraved w/ scroll. S# is on trigger guard tang. Lightly streaked & figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 7/8" over checkered wood butt on 5/16" extension. Point pattern checkering is at grip & a vacant silver oval is on toeline. Matching short splinter ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: bbls.: bore diameter: right: .733", left: .733". Restriction: right: .006" (IC), left: .006" (IC). Minimum Wall Thickness: right: .017", left: .023". STOCK: DAH: 2 5/16". DAC: 1 3/8+". LOP: 14 7/8". CAST: 0. WEIGHT: 5 lbs. 6 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun housed in brown leather "Abercrombie & Fitch" marked VC case w/ stitched leather corners. Case lined in burgundy cloth, reproduction label & charge card for number 17266 are in lid. CONDITION: good as partially refinished. Bbls. retaining nearly all of a good quality reblack. Action w/ traces of original very light case hardening colors. Top lever, floorplate, & trigger guard w/ nearly all of a later reblue. Stocks w/ nearly all oil refinish w/ some light subsequent marks. Checkering has been recut. Bores are very fine w/ little evidence of repairs. Action has a touch of looseness. Cheeks of buttstock have a screw repair w/ plug over screwhead. Mechanically fine. Case leather is very good w/ some scattered bumps & rubs. Interior cloth shows soiling & wear. (21-4008/MGM).
