AN UNUSUAL AND LOVELY MAHOGANY DISPLAY PEDESTAL WITH INLAID MOTHER-OF-PEARL
This display pedestal, sometimes called a fern stand, is made of mahogany, which is beautifully inlaid with mother-of-pearl flowers, birds and branches. The inlay has been done on the top as well as on each leg and the skirts between the legs. It is probably from Vietnam, judging by the style of inlay and the tropical mahogany used. It is quite feminine and graceful in its lines and curves. It is rather tall at 36.5" in height; it is 15" at its widest point, with its top surface about 11" in diameter.
Cross members support the lower part of the legs and give the pedestal strength. Condition is good, and the piece is very attractive. The finish has been restored to a rich satin lustre. One of the skirts was once broken and glued back together (see last photo above). In the corner of a room or against a wall, that side would not be visible at all, even though the section doesn't look bad the way it is. The inlay is for the most part intact, but there are very minor losses which have been restored. Additional photos are available upon request.
