INDIAN MADE SHIELD AND COVER, PLAINS, LATE 19th C. 1) Indian made shield with rawhide disc bound by a bent wood hoop, and wooden grip both wrapped with rawhide thongs. Carrying strap attached across back. Front of shield decorated with two handprints in red paint. Stamped on top back Miller Bros/101 Ranch". CONDITION: No apparent damage and usual surface soiling. SIZE: Diameter is 16-1/4". 2) Shield cover consists of two pieces of tanned hide laced together with one orig patch at lower left margin. Large thunderbird-like image painted in black in center, encircled by sgl, narrow black and red bands near perimeter. Five turkey vulture, secondary wing feathers are suspended along bottom margin. (These feathers are definitely from a turkey vulture buzzard—not to be taken for eagle feathers). Driebe 1997, pg 329. Size: Diameter is 17-1/2". CONDITION: No apparent damage to cover proper.
