INDIAN MADE BEAR CLAW NECKLACE, LATE 19TH CENTURY. Owner states that this is of Apache origin". Indian made closely following one of the traditional Plains Indian methods of assembling a necklace of bear claws. This necklace consists of nine grizzly claws and eight black bear claws attached to a core of buffalo hide with fur, edged with red felt of the type often seen used as backing for buffalo lap robes. Metallic and blue beads of unknown material used as spacers for the claws, as well as numerous metal beads suspended on thongs. Driebe 1997, pg. 322. Size: 15" long.
