Four DsS on vellum signed by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, A. J. Dallas, Philadelphia, May 31, 1794. Certifying “That the Three annexed Instruments of Writing are true Copies from the Originals, as filed among the Records of the late Supreme Executive Council.” A contemporary ribbon is affixed to certificate which originally joined the three deeds, though Dallas’ seal is lost. The original deeds had been signed by Thomas McKean as President of the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council and the names of all the signing Pennsylvania commissioners and the Native American chiefs of the momentous land cessions that constituted the western quarter of Pennsylvania. The first, approx 24½"x26", dated Oct 21, 1784, is bounded roughly by the Ohio River to Beaver Creek to the Susquehanna River to Kittanning. Clerically signed by the Six Nations tribe, and also by Oliver Wolcott at the Treaty of Fort Stanwix. The second deed, 25½"x30", dated Jan 21, 1785, being described the same as the first, is clerically signed by the Wyandot and Delaware tribes and by William Bradford at the Treaty of Fort McIntosh. The third, approx 25½"x30½", dated January [9], 1789, cedes the Presq’Isle [Erie] area and all bays and harbors. Clerically signed by several tribes, parts of which are severely faded, and by Arthur St. Clair at Fort Harmar. Two areas of severe fading which obscures two small parts of text; o/w VG. All are nicely matted and contained under glass and attractively framed to overall 37½"x45½". Ex Frank T. Siebert Library of North American Indians and American Frontier.
