INCREDIBLE U.S. GRANT AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION.
INCREDIBLE U.S. GRANT AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION. Ulysses S. Grant. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. New York. 1885. Two volumes rebound in blue half-calf, fine binding, with marbled endpapers. Laid into the volumes are no less than five mansucripts written by or about Grant. As follows: Volume I Contains the Following: 1) Between the facsimile autograph and preface is a separate, bound-in page containing a five line ANS, April 4, (n.d., though presumably 1885) 6:30 AM, written by Grant's physicians noting that he had slept well and woke in a humorous and lucid manner to relate a dream while under the influence of "the anodyne." Signed by J.H. Douglas and A. H. Shrady. 2) Following the listing of Maps and Illustrations is a separate bound-in page containing a laid in ALS, 2pp, "Headquarters Dept of the Tn, Before Vicksburg, April 3, 1863" addressed to Major General A.H. Hurlbutt, Commander of the 16th Army Corps. In this letter, Grant informs Hurlbutt that he has ordered "Washburn" ( Major General Cadwallader Colden) to take command of the cavalry of the 16th Corps (Grant had promoted him only a few weeks earlier). Sensitive to Hurlbutt's position, he suggests gives the 16th Corps commander the authority to organize the new unit into a Brigade or Division, with headquarters where Hurlbutt thinks best. He indicates he has ordered " Prentice" (Major General Benjamin Mayberry) to provide another regiment "without delay" and has ordered a steamer to provide their transport, and has ordered Admirl Porter to send the Marine Brigade up the river to report to "Dodge" (Major General Grenville M.) and cooperate with him. Signed "U.S. Grant, Maj. Genl." 3) Bound-in separate page between 210-211 with a laid-down clipped signature "U.S. Grant" on one side, and a calling card from Grant with his New York address on the other. Volume II contains the following: 1) 1p, tall legal sized inked manuscript sheet, entirely in Grant's hand, laid in after the "Maps and Illustrations" page. Page 16 of a larger manuscript, this portion discusses Grant's views on Civil Service Reform. Annotated in pencil on verso "Part of Grant's Messages." Several lines with strike-throughs. 2) Steel engraving with of Grant with his autograph "U.S. Grant" on blank margin, bound-in with appropriate tissue guard, between pgs 420 and 421. A fine compilation, including an important War Date letter written during the Vicksburg Campaign. The volumes in beautiful bindings. Slight rubbing on binding from normal shelf wear, else EXC.
