736. IMPRESSING AMERICAN SAILORS IN SOUTH AMERICA A great early 3pp. 4to., ink letter written by Captain W. A. Howard, USS Boston, "U. S. Ship Boston, Monte Video Harbor, South America, July 23, 1825", concerning fighting in a localized Brazilian civil war, the impressing of American sailors, and of the America Navy's role in the affair. In part: "...We arrived in Pernam bucco after a passage of 42 days...then sailed for Saint Salvadore...in this place we found the U. S. Ship Cyanne...we then sailed for Rio de Janeiro in company with the Cyanne which...sprung her main mast two days out...in this place [Monte Video, South America]...we found a large fleet of Brazilian men of war who are blockading Buenos Ayres...the aborigines...or Patriots are besieging the City of Monte Video...the city is surrounded by two strong walls between which is a ditch about 80 feet wide & very deep. The forces of the Patriots are...eight thousand strong, but have...only 400 artillery men and...few infantry...the Brazilians...dare not go out and attack them...if...the Brazilians go out in the country they are attacked by the Patriots...and are invariable defeated...they are the most cowardly set of scoundrels...the Buenos Ayriean fleet commanded by Admiral Brown...consist of one corvette mounting 26 guns...two Brigs 14 guns each, six or seven schooners...the Brazilian fleet commanded by Admiral Hillis consists of four heavy frigates 44 guns each six or eight corvettes mounting 26 guns...making in all about 70 or 80 sail and with this fleet they dare not attack Admiral Brown who...cannot come out to attack the blockading squadron having been ordered by the government to remain in port as they fear he will loose...Brown...came down...opposite Monte Video and attacked a large frigate...killed the captain and a number of his men...provision are growing very scarce...all communications is cut off by the patriots...it is rumored that a squadron is coming...[to] the assistance of the Buenos Ayneians...Monte Video must fall into the hands of the Patriots...the people within the walls of the city are in favor of the Patriots...the Emperor...keeps a very sharp look out...and has a great number of soldiers here...we can see from the ship a skirmish between the Patriots & Brazilians...the day we arrived they came down to the head of the harbor and burnt a vessel loaded with silks...[they] took...care to unload the silks before they set fire to her. The Brazilians attacked the Patriots but were beat off...as soon as these people can get a sufficient number of artillery men. They will...take this place...the Brazilians have captured several of our vessels...they have also impressed a number of American seamen...[and] not given up as yet and...will not be until Commodore Biddle arrives here with the Congress...the Congress, Cyanne, & the Boston can whip half the squadron. We expect a three years cruise [at] this miserable station...". An interesting letter disclosing the fact that US sailors were still vulnerable of being impressed after the War of 1812. Crosshatching affects two of the pages, with the original transmittal leaf attached. Minor toning, else very good $200-300
