IMPORTANT FATIMID INSCRIBED GLASS NECKLACE 10TH CENTURY
AN EXTREMELY RARE & IMPORTANT ANCIENT ISLAMIC FATIMID INSCRIBED GLASS JETONS SET IN SILVER NECKLACE, EGYPT CIRCA 10TH CENTURY, all six emerald green glass inscribed with names of the caliphs of the fatimid dynasty.with the Caliph's name . which reflect the political and religious authority of the Fatimid Imam-Caliphs. The function of such discs has long been under debate. First seen to be a token of currency, they later, in the mid-19th century, were thought of as coin-weights and by the end of the 19th century a new study suggested that at least some should be viewed as amulets for religious propaganda. For a summary of the debate over their function, see A.H.Morton's article in Contadini, A., Fatimid Art in the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1998, pp.104-08. The earliest weights in this collection date back to the period of Imam al-Muizz, (932-975 CE), the 14th Ismaili Imam and the fourth Imam-Caliph, who founded the city of al-Qahira al-Mu‘izziyya (the Victorious One of al-Mu‘izz), in 969, now Cairo. The city became a major seat of learning with the founding of Al Azhar, illustrating the significance placed by the Imams on scholarship, and who encouraged scholars of all faith persuasions to study and share their knowledge. Including a an important Roman/Greek Glass Camoe with head of a young ruler.
