IMPORTANT AND RARE SCRIMSHAW IVORY TUSK CARVED BY JIM FREEMAN. Inscription on the tusk as follows: “Jim Freeman Head Krouman of H.M.S. Sybille Comdre Coillier 1827”. “Jim Freeman Head Krouman of H.M.S. Owen Glendower Sir Robt Mendes Comdre 1823”. Jim Freeman served on two British Men of War, the Owen Glendower, which he misspelled and the Sybille. A Krouman is an African from the coast of Liberia. The British public records office confirms Freeman serving on these ships at the time indicated and having captains of these ships on the dates given. There is a letter outlining the history of the two ships and this tusk and a letter from the Public record office dated 1970 is included. REFERENCE: Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artist’s by Stuart M.
